RUNNING BOOKS
Lisa Jackson’s Your Pace or Mine? was lifechanging for me in many ways,” says Dr Henrietta Bowden-Jones, 54, from London. “In the two years since I read her book while on holiday in Italy, I’ve run many half marathons and three marathons, and become a member of the Serpentine Running Club.
“Lisa’s ability to set running goals and achieve them was, at times, unbelievable: when she decided to enter South Africa’s legendary Comrades 56-mile ultra, she went from regularly coming last in marathons to running a subfive- hour marathon to qualify. Her audacity appealed to me, as did her determination: she trained six times a week for 20 weeks to prepare for Comrades.
“Encouraged by Lisa’s example, I entered my first marathon in New York in 2016. Running 26.2 miles is as much a mental exercise as it is a physical one, never more so than with your first one, as you’re literally taking a step into the unknown. Your Pace or Mine? turned out to be a constant throughout that year of marathon training, a bit like the confidence-boosting clinical handbook for junior doctors I kept with me at all times as I walked through the wards in my first year at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
“What was it about Your Pace or Mine? that touched me so deeply? Being Italian by upbringing, Lisa’s openness and ability to talk to other runners during races was one I identified with. A friend of Lisa’s once described her as the Mother Teresa of Marathon Running and I loved her tales of “rescuing” other runners, who were about to throw in the towel− and of being rescued in return I adore travelling, and reading about Lisa’s races abroad inspired me to enter the 2017 Marathon du Médoc and Bank of America Chicago Marathon. The book made me keen to run in those parts of the world where I could, sweaty and with a pounding heart, smile up at the sky in gratitude for having been granted the health to push myself further and experience the incredible feeling of being alive.
