Diagnosed with cancer at 14, Wendy Derbyshire was in and out of hospital for much of her life. She endured relentless rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy; she had her leg amputated; and, heartbreakingly, she was denied precious time with her daughter, Amanda, who was just nine when she passed away.
Wendy had spent much of her time at The Christie – one of Europe’s leading cancer centres – where she received treatment, rehabilitation and care. Amanda, too, spent time at The Christie with her mum. As she grew up and learned of the outstanding level of care her mother had received there, Amanda became passionate about raising funds for the hospital. Now 37, Amanda’s fundraising efforts over the last six years have been incredible. In 2011, she co-founded The Manchester PA Network which, to date, has raised £91,233.82 for The Christie charity. In September, Amanda will be taking part in the Women’s Running Race Series event in Manchester to raise awareness for the charity and to push that fundraising figure closer to the network’s £100,000 target.
Wendy was just 34 when she passed away, after 20 years fighting the cancer, which had started in her leg. Fighting for a chance to see her daughter grow up, at 32, Wendy had surgery to have her leg amputated. However, given the medical technology and basic facilities available at the time, this was extremely painful. “She had a false leg which was just awful,” says Amanda. “It was nothing like you see now. [The leg] didn’t bend, it wasn’t flesh coloured, it was attached with a belt round her waist, so there was all the pain from that and the pain of it rubbing on where her leg was taken away.”
