In issue 346 of Woodturning magazine we have lots for you to enjoy. In Projects, Pat Carroll makes a trinket holder; Ian Woodford commemorates a special day with his bell box; Brynley Edwards turns a set of wind chimes; and Rick Rich makes a child’s toy whistle.

In our Techniques section, Colwin Way looks at the possibilities of epoxy resin casting; Chris West discusses the considerations that need to be addressed when designing a functional item; Kurt Hertzog answers readers’ questions; Mark Sanger continues his series on bowl turning; Richard Findley completes his unique chess set; Stewart Furini ponders the pros and cons of colouring different types of wood; Les Symonds progresses through his in-depth look at the tools we work with, continuing with spindle and detail gouges; Andy Coates look at the problems and tricks of turning thin-walled vessels; and Emiliano Achaval continues with his series of pieces inspired by Australian artist Guilio Marcolongo.

In Features, we meet Canadian turner Dave Roberts who makes items from simple bowls and salt and pepper mills to cowboy hats; vase turner Jim O’Donnell explains how he has expanded his art by including new materials in his work; and Pete Moncrieff-Jury considers the role of composition in good design.

Woodturning

As an advanced woodturner I am more interested in design techniques and design approach rather than the cutting of the wood, unless of course, it is directly involved in the design outcome.
Also, my observation is that most woodturners are wood artists and I am more interested in the practical useful items that we can make. Other than the above I find the magazine very inspiring and is my link to the UK wood turning fraternity since I am now retired to South Korea. Reviewed sabato 9 maggio 2020
