ANDY LAST’S tenure at Castleford ended with a performance like many before it - drab, lifeless and thoroughly uninspiring.
He was put out of his misery almost immediately after the final hooter, as the club pulled the plug on a 19-match reign that brought four wins and very little to cheer. Few coaching appointments are so unpopular before they are even made, but Last’s time as interim chief after Lee Radford’s early departure did nothing to give fans much hope, and little that followed since did either.
Last is not solely to blame for the current issues at Castleford, many of which he inherited, like an ageing squad of players long past their best.
Nor is he necessarily to blame for the wider culture which, in part, enabled his initial appointment; a laissez-faire attitude stemming from a confidence the club couldn’t possibly get relegated this year, which proved a reckless misjudgement.
