Linus Torvalds announced the release of Linux 6.1 just in time for the holidays. On the one hand, users could see it as a nice Christmas present, but it made the whole end of year period quite frantic for kernel developers. The reason for this is that following a new kernel release typically comes a two-week merge window, during which disruptive changes planned for the next release are merged into the code base (these are subsequently stabilised in the RC or Release Candidate kernels).
