Logging in and getting started
Having conversations on Matrix is open until you set up your own groups.
In many ways, you can use Matrix as a social media alternative. You have options to join groups and chat about your favourite topics, and talk directly with friends. One big difference is that on the Big Tech services, you are set to public by default and you can choose subjects as you go. With Matrix, you choose your subject by joining a group.
Another big difference is that if you want to have private conversations, you must take action yourself. You need to create a group where you alone can invite people. For it to be truly secure, you must also create encryption keys.
The strength of this is that you are responsible for your own security. You need to know how to verify any people who join your group. This requires tools that can help you handle security – and each client has one such tool.
