Z ink is a Mesa Gallium driver that uses the OpenGL implementation of Mesa to enable hardware accelerated OpenGL when only a Vulkan driver is available. Developer Mike Blumenkrantz has got it running on non-
Mesa drivers, most noticeably Nvidia’s proprietary Vulkan driver, with some impressive results. With the Nvidia 495.44 beta driver and his latest Zink code, he discovered that the graphically intensive Tomb Raider reboot saw a big leap in performance. While Blumenkrantz admits on his blog (https://bit.ly/lxf284zink) that “I doubt that Zink maintains this performance gap for all titles,” this is still exciting stuff, and other games will benefit from this.
