3D Printing? Please!

Hi Zak, I finished reading the March 2021 Maximum PC. Your article about 3D printing asked if there was any interest in the subject. I’m interested!

I almost impulse-bought a 3D printer this past year, but talked myself out of it. I’m glad I did as I don’t know much about it and would likely have purchased something I might regret later.

Another topic that might be of interest to the magazine is the concept of homelabs. I’ve purchased used systems from eBay that have 12 drive bays, dual Xeons, 10Gb NICs, and so on. I run virtualization, NAS (Unraid being my favorite), etc. I know there’s been a few articles, but I would love to see more.

EDITOR, ZAK STOREY,  RESPONDS: First, let me just say that since writing that article and asking for folk to email in, I have been inundated with responses regarding 3D printing, and how best to approach it. I’ve read every single one (although, sadly, my inbox is such a mess these days, I can’t respond to everyone, although I am trying!), and we’ve now scheduled some content concerning those plucky plastic printers.

It was a toss-up between two of our writers—Dave Alcock and Kris Butterill—and Kris won out, so next issue, we’ve got a fantastic feature on getting started with 3D printing and how it all fits together in 2021. Dave hasn’t been left out in the cold, though, as he decided to build his own bespoke keyboard from the ground up using a few aftermarket parts and his own 3D printed designs, so he’s also writing a feature for us on that. I’m really excited about both. Obviously, I’m aware that this is Maximum PC, not Maximum 3D, but that said, we’ll likely run a tutorial series over the next few issues with some cool print ideas and setup guides.
