Rugby’s metal magicians raise their vertigo-inducing bar

CONJURER ARE THE most relatable kind of rising stars. They haven’t had to dress up as Satanic antipopes to get people buzzing over them. Nor have they had to vomit in their masks night in and night out or write some crass slogan on a t-shirt. They just make really fucking good metal – and the scene’s fallen in love with them for it.

There’s no grand mythology to Conjurer’s backstory. They were just four lads in their parents’ basements in Rugby, out to make the kind of music they wanted to hear. It just so happens that that kind of music is what lots of us wanted to hear too. Their 2016 EP, I, tore down the barriers between extreme metal’s subgenres, pillaging the best bits of sludge, death, doom and post-metal. The four songs earned them a Bloodstock slot and an enviable record deal, but it wasn’t until debut album Mire dropped that they became the most talked-about upstarts in the country. Incorporating melodic breaks and newfound speed metal flickers, it made anticipation explode into acclaim. Full of pummelling riffs, unpredictable detours and gut-quaking growls, it was all of metal’s best bits without the clichéd bullshit. Cue a headline UK tour, an even bigger record deal and the inability for anyone to go to a metal show without seeing at least one Conjurer shirt.
