Shrewsbury shed’s wandering ‘coal tank’ has appeared many miles from home at a remote spot deep in The Forest of Dean. In olden times, such occurrences weren’t that uncommon, with railways being far more numerous than roads, especially in rural areas. With prior permission from the loco shed foreman, it was often possible to hire a locomotive for the weekend or even a week or two, much like we do these days with the motor car. This was very popular in the holiday season and was much enjoyed by railway employees. Here we see the hired locomotive being inspected by the foreman, who will check for damage before releasing the customers’ deposit, with the two chaps planning to head home ‘on the cushions’.
