1 SBT
13th St. #2
Sarabeth Tucek’s return to action as SBT, 11 years after her last album, is one of the low-key musical events of 2023 thus far. On this highlight of her
Joan Of All
LP, the former Bill Callahan collaborator hymns her old New York neighbourhood – and, implicitly, Patti Smith and the Velvets too.

2 MEG BAIRD
Cross Bay
Meg Baird has been perfecting her filigreed take on acid-folk since singing with Espers in the early 2000s (you might also recognise her from heavier psych types Heron Oblivion). Cross Bay comes from her fourth solo LP, and showcases her exceptional fingerpicking as well as that uncanny, ethereal voice; Trees would be a decent UK folk rock reference.

3 SAM BURTON
Maria
If Meg Baird’s aesthetic is classic minimalism, LA resident Sam Burton errs towards the maximal – towards baroque, string-laden chamber-pop, like a young Jimmy Webb produced by Jonathan Wilson. “To me,” he told MOJO recently, “it feels like holding hands with the past and acknowledging it. It’s about having a kinship but trying to make it personal.”
