CALMAC has said it will stop offering plastic straws aboard its ferries.
The company has announced it has signed up to the #NaeStrawAtAw campaign, aimed at reducing marine pollution and which was set up by pupils at a Glasgow primary school. The campaign has already seen Ullapool recognised as the first village in the UK to ditch plastic straws in bars, restaurants and cafes.
And Skye MSP Kate Forbes has welcomed the news of the ferry operator’s decision. Ms Forbes, who is leading the Final Straw initiative, said she hoped that the development would encourage other transport operators such as the ScotRail Alliance to take similar action.
