Academics have hijacked Gaelic

Sir,

I have often heard comments on language and culture from individuals who are alien to the areas in which they try to be do-gooders.

So regarding Gaelic and its abuse in general, we can well do without being preached to by people from the central belt who have little knowledge of or spoken ability in Gaelic.

I am a genuine, well-versed proper Gael, and I can assure you this kind of lopsided advice, both on the oral and academic side, is not helping the process at all.

To add insult to injury, the idea that throwing money at issues is going to provide a solution is for the birds, sweet as they might sing.

I have painful feeling in my bones that it is the academic hijacking of the language over the past 40 years that has given it a downhill run in both quantity and quality, one example being that, when the language was non-academic, it was real, very good orally and alive in a normal way, without anyone forever preaching that it should be like this or like that.
