Bob Anderson
Gone but not forgotten
A privateer who lost his life when on the verge of the big break he had always yearned for
Words by Richard Heseltine
Anderson’s finest result, third at the notorious Zeltweg circuit, could equally have flattered his talent or finally shown the true extent of it to the world. Sadly, we will never know.

IT WAS A bravura performance, and one that had no effect whatsoever on advancing his career. Bob Anderson’s third-place finish in the 1964 Austrian Grand Prix was partially earned through attrition, Zeltweg being a cruel joke of a circuit. The airfield’s many bumps did for some of the more fancied runners and riders – the plucky Brit may have come home three laps down on winner Lorenzo Bandini, but he was ahead of former Grand Prix winners as the chequered flag descended.
