THIS issue contains a four-page preview for what has already been dubbed ‘the sale of the decade’ – 15 engines, 50 tractors and 47 commercial vehicles, amid much else – that form the bulk of the Keeley Collection to be sold by Cheffins on site at Knowl Hill, Berkshire on Saturday, May 14.
No sooner had we taken all this in, came the announcement that three of the reserve collection engines at World of Country Life, Sandy Bay, Devon, are to be sold by Kivells (News, this issue) in a one-off auction that should take Mr Wakeham no longer than half an hour’s work. It has also been announced that Carters Steam Fair’s travelling arcade will be no more, the arcade vehicle itself being past repair, and the vintage ‘slotties’ sold off at a specialist auction house in the Midlands. With the passing of John Morley a few years ago and the subsequent sale of his arcadia, and now the Carters machines being dispersed, we regret the end of our claim to this type of travelling amusement but practicalities must prevail – and we raise our hat to Carters who continue to travel the rides that they do for our enjoyment...
