Avast and AVG use the same malware detection engine and tools, wrapped in different desktop clients. We’ve chosen to review Avast, as AV-Test data shows its client to have less of an impact on system performance than AVG’s.
Avast came top of the malware protection tests we use, aggregated from three highly reputable testing houses. It detected 100% of threats in AV-Test’s real-time exposure and flat file scanning tests, with no false positives. It similarly scored a 100% total accuracy rating in SE Labs’ test, defending against all threats during live malware exposure tests, with no false positive identifications of legitimate software or websites. In AV-Comparatives’ real-world tests, it protected against all threats but picked up five false positive identifications. Nonetheless, it’s still one of the best performing anti-malware tools in the tests.
