Eset was one of several antivirus suites whose malware detection engines put in a perfect performance during AV-Test’s real-world malware exposure test, during which PCs are exposed to threats as they would be when encountering them in the wild. Likewise its reference malware sample tests, where the antivirus software is instructed to scan a large set of recent samples of malicious files. Notably, it scored 100% in both tests across two months, with no false positives.
Unfortunately, Eset had a worse time of it in AV-Comparatives’ latest real-world protection tests. Its protection score of 99.1% – the percentage of malware blocked – matches that of Windows Defender, which, as the default Windows antivirus that ships with the OS, is the benchmark for malware protection performance in our tests. However, Eset only misidentified one benign test item as malicious, giving it one false positive identification, compared to Defender’s three.
