Launched in 2021, the dirt-cheap Raspberry Pi Pico was a departure for the Pi ecosystem: rather than using a general-purpose Arm processor from Broadcom, it was based on Raspberry Pi’s own RP2040 microcontroller. While not powerful enough to run a full Linux desktop, this tiny board was perfect for simple project duties at an almost laughably low price, with the Pico W version adding integrated Wi-Fi.
A follow-up came earlier this year in the form of the Pico 2, which offered a more powerful processor plus more RAM and storage, and the latest update brings Wi-Fi on board as well, giving you the freedom to situate the board more or less wherever you want it. For under £7 it’s incredibly versatile.
