EMERSON, LAKE & POWELL
The Complete Collection SPIRIT OF UNICORN MUSIC
The other ELP’s sole album remastered and bulked out.
Who else was on that original list when Greg Lake and Keith Emerson sat down in the mid-80s to draw up the names of a potential new drummer who might fit the template of a resurrected ELP while their former bandmate Carl Palmer was off conquering the world as part of the multi-platinum supergroup Asia? Simon Phillips? Neil Peart? Jeff Porcaro? Ian Paice? In the end the job went to big-hitting ex-Jeff Beck/Rainbow/Whitesnake man Cozy Powell –a happy alphabetic coincidence, granted, but ultimately a decision made on merit. “He was such a good technical drummer and such a good performer,” Lake noted at the time. “Though it escaped no one’s notice that Powell’s surname helpfully began with a ‘P’.”
