As Hawksmoor, Bristol-based artist James McKeown produces hauntology-indebted electronica, with previous inspirations including Victorian religious architecture and JG Ballard. The spur this time comes from McKeown’s research into and experimentation with the drug 5-MeO-DMT, a psychedelic compound that empties the mind rather than overwhelms it. The result is an album of varying moods and textures, meditative but never merely trippy – music as practical therapy.
