PROGRESSIVE METAL
PROGRESSIVE METAL
Dom Lawson buckles up for a delve into the darker, heavier side.
Strange times such as these call for even stranger music. Enter Cryptic Shift, who have carved out a singular niche in the worlds of death and thrash metal. With a progressive streak several light years wide and absolutely no regard given to making things easy for the listener, Overspace And Supertime (Metal Blade) is an astonishing piece of work. Eighty minutes of unfathomable fusion and esoteric extremity, it takes its basic cues from the likes of Voivod, Nocturnus and Cynic and the proceeds to feed them through a sanity-threatening kaleidoscope of cosmic complexity. Occasionally impenetrable, at least for the uninitiated, songs like the staggering, 30-minute Stratocumulus Evergaol contain more wild ideas than most progressive metal bands will manage across entire careers.
