Sylvia ou la Nymphe de Diane, the late nineteenth-century French ballet chosen to open the 2019/2020 season at La Scala Theatre in December, is the focus of our special feature this issue.
As you browse, you will come across a detailed historical investigation of its origins and its fortunes over the years, as well as Frederick Ashton and John Neumeier’s twentieth-century adaptations. We also interview Sylvia’s latest ‘creator’, Manuel Legris, choreographer of the version coming to La Scala co-produced with the Wiener Staatsballett, where it premiered last year. We also talk to Legris about his future, given that his mandate in Vienna is coming to an end, and that he is among the possible ballet directors tipped to take over at La Scala from next year.
We also meet the up-and-coming duo on the Italian scene, Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi. The pair won the first edition of the Hermès Award in Milan, and are making a name for themselves as innovators in Europe as well. We have plenty of reviews of Italian premieres, and from Glasgow our correspondent tells us about the Scottish Ballet’s riveting production of The Crucible. The English National Ballet is getting a new home, and with Italian étoile Viviana Durante freshly appointed as head of its School, we take a look at her plans in our Training Centres section. Happy reading!
