From an early age, Aida Pravia felt she was born with a pencil or paintbrush in her hand. She grew up in an artistic environment where her self-taught artist mother loved painting the walls of the family home. When Aida would return home from school in the afternoons, she never knew what new features she would find that her mother had applied during the day.
“I remember that my study room had the four walls painted from top to bottom with a landscape, a gradient blue sky, clouds painted like roses, trees with coloured apples and small houses with clothes hanging on the lines. Everything was fantasy and imagination. My brother’s room had a majestic tiger painted on one wall as a headboard.”
Eventually her mother worked through the entire house, and then moved on to painting the furniture. Aida cannot recall the exact moment she herself began painting, but remembers painting baskets, boxes, milk cans, and recycled furniture.
