Reclaim  |  RECLAIM 02 May 2016
Among the eclectic mix of features in this issue of Reclaim, we meet some incredible family businesses who are bringing expertise and skills from generations past into the present. It got me thinking about my own family, as I come from a line of ironmongers who owned a shop in Lincolnshire for over 100 years, until competition from the DIY superstores in the 1980s brought business to an end.
Many independent businesses have to fight to keep going, which is why Reclaim magazine is celebrating the likes of Gods Own Junkyard and Source Antiques, whose unique family businesses are thriving.
My grandfather’s ironmongery shop sold everything from doorknobs to garden furniture, with a sideline in antiques and second hand pianos in the shop’s basement. You never knew what you might find, which is how I like to think of Reclaim magazine.
Across the pages of this, our second edition, we’re showcasing independent businesses, dealers, traders, designers and makers who choose to work with reclaimed materials, vintage and antiques.
You’ll discover all you need to know about reclaimed parquet, enjoy a glimpse inside the self-proclaimed ‘living museum of curiosities’ at Aynhoe House in the Cotswolds, and meet an ‘urban exploration’ photographer who photographs fascinating ‘time capsule’ properties.
There’s an interview with talented designer and maker Kate Noakes, who transforms old cabinets into high-end furniture, and designer Juli Bolaños-Durman, who turns old bottles into stunning works of art.
From the finest decorative salvage and upcycled vintage Japanese kimonos, to sourcing the best mid-century furniture and a guide to Berlin’s vintage scene, we hope Reclaim magazine will inspire you to create a unique home with stories to tell.
