THE KNOX EFFECT
THE AFRICAN AMERICAN TRAILBLAZER WHO CREATED MADDEN
Michael Knox was an inspiring African American figure who, maybe unwittingly, paved the way for other people of colour to make a career out of creating videogames. Before Madden, he was an unassuming figure and, like many in the industry, a self-proclaimed nerd who loved sci-fi shows such as Star Trek. But after the game’s incredible reception he knew he was also a rarity: a black man in the US who had a voice that could not be ignored. For Richard Hilleman, Michael deserves being compared with Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play in Major League Baseball.
