Though it had outlasted its competitors and secured Nintendo’s place as the leader in the handheld console business, there was no doubt that the Game Boy was looking just a little tired by 1996. It was hardly the flashiest piece of technology around when it launched, and seven years had passed since then. With no major competition on the horizon, Nintendo decided to play it safe and launch a fairly conservative redesign of the system, rather than introducing a brand-new piece of hardware.
