She had never won a Paralympic medal, but the Norwegian Birgit Skarstein entered Tokyo having not lost a race since finishing fourth at Rio. She arrived the firm favourite.
After a comfortable route through the heat and semi, from the first stroke of the A-Final Skarstein showed her pedigree. Leaping out of the blocks quickest, by 200m she had a decisive clear water lead, leaving France, Israel and Ukraine to battle it out for the remaining medals.
