Wingfield Sculls

Anachronistic and enthralling; The Wingfield Sculls, first raced in 1830, is a side-by-side single sculling contest over the Championship Course in London. Winners earn the titles of; ‘The Champion of the Thames’ and ‘The British Amateur Sculling Champion’. This year’s edition was no whimsy.
In the women’s race Lola Anderson punched out an early lead which proved too much for her competitors to overcome. Anderson said, “I gave myself the best water and got the hard bit done early”. By Barnes Bridge, she admitted “I was counting the strokes by that point, so crossing the finish line was a relief”.
