No need for mass-produced cards or overcrowded restaurants, says our columnist. Show you care without St Valentine's help
Ah! Here's Valentine's Day, round again, and memories of all the anxious anticipation of every 14 February of one's youth. You'd sent at least one card to one or maybe two boys of your dreams. You'd signed them 'Guess who? xxx' and hoped for the best from at least one of them.
Then, at school, the gathering of the girls at recreation, usually behind the bike sheds. The aching disappointment of the friends who'd had nothing in the post, and a mounting sense of furious jealousy aimed at the two or three of the prettiest who had a little pile of envelopes, beautiful cards, all unsigned, and were trying to recognise the handwriting of the sender.
