When Mrs Slocombe used to chide her glamorous young colleague on Are You Being Served? it was always a crisp, 'That'll do, Miss Brahms' - never Shirley. I'm not sure viewers ever knew most of the characters' Christian names.
Things have changed since 1972, when that sitcom first aired. Now we're on first-name terms with colleagues, and even cold callers use our Christian names. However, this informality isn't always welcome, if our survey of almost 3,000 Saga customers is anything to go by.
