“This is how it ends!” reads a doom-laden graffiti tag in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Jason Reitman’s long-time-coming continuation of the spooky franchise his father Ivan began in 1984. In actuality, though, this perky, nostalgic, good-natured throwback begins a whole new and promising chapter for a series that seemed to hit the buffers five years ago with Paul Feig’s misguided female-led reboot.
Though the 2016 Ghostbusters was undeserving of the vitriolic opprobrium it so widely received, its goofy Saturday Night Live stylings undeniably failed to connect with the films’ core fanbase. That’s not an error Reitman’s sequel comes close to repeating, with Afterlife courting that demographic from the off with a tsunami of Easter eggs.
