ISAW THE DROWNED MAN IN 2015 AND THAT was mind-blowing. I didn’t know anything about that sort of production and it was just amazing to me. You sometimes go to the theatre and it can feel like a facsimile of another life that doesn’t involve you, but with this you wander around inside a four-floor building and just get completely absorbed [in the story]. I spent a lot of time thinking, ‘How can I replicate this in my writing?’”
Louis Greenberg is talking about immersive theatre which, unlike more traditional plays, incorporates the viewer into a narrative and allows them to explore and interact with the story (and the players) as they see fit. It’s the subject of the author’s terrific new novel Exposure, a surreal psychological mystery that feels not unlike a David Lynch film transposed to Leamington Spa.
