Titling your film The Batman is nothing if not ambitious. This character has been a one-man multiverse for over 80 years, incarnating as everything from a gothic spectre of vengeance to an ickle Lego man. It’s fair to say that he punches the definite article in the face.
Matt Reeves leans into the darkness. Gloomy, intense and brutal, The Batman continues the Dark Knight’s seemingly ever-grimmer trajectory on the big screen. If Christopher Nolan found inspiration in Heat and the Bond movies then Reeves synthesises such labyrinthine crime dramas as The Godfather and Chinatown with the bleak, clammy vibe of David Fincher’s serial killer tale Seven.
