THE FINAL FRONTIER
REMEMBERING TWO TITANS OF COMIC BOOKS
NEAL ADAMS 1941-2022
New York-born artist Neal Adams was one of the key creatives in Batman history, defining the Dark Knight’s enduring image as a brooding creature of the night.
Adams had a background in commercial art and brought that sleek, photorealist style to comics, a thrilling burst of modernism that shook up the industry in the 1960s. He collaborated with writer Dennis O’Neil on a run that returned Batman to his gothic/noir roots, overwriting the colourful but faddish TV series and securing the character’s ongoing popularity. Adams and O’Neil also teamed on Green Arrow/Green Lantern, gaining acclaim for socially progressive stories that reflected the turbulent America of the times.
