→ It would be easy to dismiss Vanessa Len’s debut as a bog-standard YA fantasy, given its forgettably beige title and elements recognisable to any Harry Potter fan: a protagonist hitting a certain age and receiving magical powers; a nasty family who can only be the Malfoys; a section of London that’s basically Diagon Alley. It’s a relief, then, to discover that once you’re past these familiar beats, Only A Monster becomes a thoughtful, well-constructed tale.
