Owner Ian Davies talks to us about gaming in the valleys and moving into Bristol

What’s the story behind Rules of Play – how did the shop come to be?
Rules of Play began in 2010 when two old school friends – Ian and Steve – and Ian’s wife Michelle, realised that Cardiff had nothing to offer in the way of board games. The last games store had closed down and nothing was filling its place – besides, we were all massive gamers since childhood, too! So, we set about opening Rules of Play; a multi-purpose retail operation that would go on to make a significant impact on the landscape of Cardiff shopping and events.
What makes Rules of Play one-of-a-kind as a hobby store?
Rules of Play is unique for the way we approach retail. Sure, we have thousands of games in-store and online – but we’ve never been satisfied with leaving it at just that. And we approach gaming with a non-elitist attitude – we appreciate that not everyone is into big heavy-hitters. We’re just as happy to recommend and sell Jungle Speed and Perudo as we are Scythe!
