The Artist  |  August 20
With lockdown restrictions being eased many of you may take the chance to venture further from home to find painting inspiration. This month, Barry Herniman continues his painting journeys along country lanes – and what better way to spend a summer’s day? Or you could take inspiration from Jenny Aitken and paint a glowing sky, or follow Paul Gadenne as he paints a classic watercolour landscape in the style of Edward Seago. If you prefer to stay indoors, Peter Graham demonstrates that ideal still-life subjects can be found around the home and garden, and Carole Baker shows you how to create an exciting painting from a dull reference photograph. Julie Collins explores and modifies her watercolours for summer still lifes and Jenny Wheatley advises on how to make the most of your acrylic colours. Ruth Buchanan’s series on figure drawing continues and this month she shows you the linear and scribble techniques, plus there are two exclusive demonstrations for our digital readers. When you’ve painted your masterpiece you will need to frame it and, in the first of two articles, Bob Brandt has some advice on how to select the right style of frame for your painting. Plus Sema Martin offers encouragement and advice on how to sell your work. All this and up-to-date news on what’s going on in the world of art – let us know what you’ve been doing, we love to hear from you!
