Peter Gathercole reflects on the loss of an important fishery
I WISH I COULD REPORT THAT I WAS
shocked by the news that, after 80 years, Eyebrook Reservoir
(First Cast,
p8) would no longer be a trout fishery. Instead, I felt resigned to the inevitable.
Stuarts and Lloyds, later British Steel and then Tata, built the reservoir before the outbreak of World War II. The company had relocated from Scotland to Corby in Northamptonshire and brought many Scottish employees. Stocking the reservoir with brown trout for fishing provided its men with a welcome break from the blast furnaces. The company offered a subsidised ticket for its workers, such as my father, and their children.
