JARVIS Cocker once lamented that the enduring legacy of Britpop was the “untucked shirt”. As laddism seemed to take over, Pulp leant into that creeping sense of bloat and decline to craft their dark 1998 masterpiece, This Is Hardcore. “There was a feeling not to just replicate Different Class and take things to the next level,” says photographer Paul Burgess, recruited by Cocker to document the decadence. “The budget got bigger, so the ambition was raised. The “…Hardcore” video took a week to shoot at Pinewood, and cost a great deal of money to make.
