WHEN Charles Moriarty first met Amy Winehouse through mutual friends in 2003, he wasn’t a photographer – just “someone who ran around with a camera”. But that’s exactly what Winehouse was looking for as she worked out how to present herself to the world. “She was chasing authenticity,” says Moriarty. “She felt a lot of the solo female acts around at the time were very bland and she didn’t want the record label to just churn her out like another cookie-cutter artist. The music that she loved was so varied and interesting, and she really just wanted to stand out as Amy.”
