Understanding the party wall process
A party wall is a shared wall, floor or structure that separates two properties. The term can refer to a structure within a building, such as a dividing wall between two terraced houses, or a boundary wall. This may include walls that are entirely situated on one owner’s land, but serve to separate two properties and are shared by both owners.
Understanding party walls is important if you plan to undertake building works, such as constructing a wall on or up to the boundary line, cutting into or increasing the height or thickness of the party wall, and excavating within three to six meters of a neighbouring property if the excavation is deeper than the foundation of the adjoining building.
