Dante  |  DANTE Apr-May 2017
This is our Spring issue, with the theme breaking out all over our pages.
Our starting point is the impact of the “Arab Spring” five years on. That wave of protests and uprisings spread like wildfire across the Middle East. We focus in on its beginnings in Tunisia.
The most famous Miss Tunisia, Wahiba Arres, is our cover star in another illustration created by an artist exclusively for Dante. She is portrayed by Mataro da Vergato, like Flora the Roman goddess, surrounded by flowers which led to the uprising becoming known as the Jasmine Revolution. Wahiba is our guide to a country still evolving after that momentous rebellion. We ask: What happens next? Now that women again have an option, what are they saying about wearing headscarves or not? How has tradition met with reform? And especially, how is this beautiful country faring after the tourist resort mass shooting in June 2015? This ended with 38 people being killed, 30 of them British.
Many European countries have now dropped travel advisories on those wanting to visit Tunisia – except for Britain. That hasn’t stopped a fair few Britons making the trip, ignoring the “ban” and a lack of insurance.
They will discover a country now known for uncrowded beaches and reasonable prices. Tunisia highly recommends itself to those prepared to make the journey.
