DANZA&DANZA International

September/October 2024 An icon of world dance. A teacher, choreographer and poet, Carolyn Carlson continues to captivate audiences with her dance. We dedicate our cover story to this extraordinary artist and woman as we attempt to render her universe full of imagery and her tireless ability to support and encourage new generations. This summer of festivals brought a wave of new creations and premieres – discussed in our reviews section – with many must-see dates still to come. Italian theatres will be re-opening their doors and raising their curtains for some exciting shows, some on specific themes, and from Turin to Florence, Milan, Gorizia, Bologna and Reggio Emilia there will be many fresh offerings to discover. We also meet Philippe Kratz who has recently and unexpectedly been announced as the new director of Nuovo Balletto di Toscana and is honoured to carry on the legacy of the company as he takes over from its founder Cristina Bozzolini, while continuing to work on his own choreography and commissioned works for some important ensembles. Meanwhile, plans are afoot for an immense tour of "Notte Morricone", the new creation by Marcos Morau, currently the hottest European choreographer on the scene, as he puts his name to his first work for Aterballetto, the leading dance company on the Italian stage. We share some notes on the creation after the first rehearsals and early remarks. We will also be discussing the new wave of Greek choreographers as they take Europe by storm, as we look at the overwhelming success of choreographers such as Euripides Laskaridis, Christos Papadopoulos and Ioannis Mandafounis. And also the rebirth of the historical London City Ballet and the exhibition Iconoclasts in Venice lagoon that explores women who have broken the rules through archive photographs and video from the Biennale di Venezia.
