The prospect of OLED panels on the desktop has tantalized PC enthusiasts for the better part of a decade. It now looks like OLED is going to make the transition from HDTV to desktop monitor, but is OLED really all that?
For sure, it brings huge advances over LCD tech. OLED’s defining advantage is per-pixel lighting—each pixel is its own light source, creating the possibility for total precision when it comes to contrast and dynamic range. With OLED, you can have a single pixel running at full brightness next to one completely switched off and outputting no light at all.
