A JUICE A DAY…
A glass of fruit juice every day is enough to reduce stroke and cardiovascular disease risk, probably due to the blood-pressure-lowering effects you get from its vitamins, minerals and polyphenols.
Previous clinical trials reporting cardiovascular benefits for fruit juice have tended to use large daily doses of around half a litre, which are above dietary recommendations. However, a new meta-analysis study published in the European Journal of Nutrition said a small glass of 150-200ml per day is enough.
The results showed a link between drinking 100 per cent fruit juice - the type that contains no added sugars - and reduced risk of stroke and cardiovascular events (eg heart attack) with the greatest benefit at daily intakes of around 150-200ml. This is consistent with health guidance across Europe and America. In contrast, studies on the risk of type 2 diabetes, blood sugars control, cholesterol levels, obesity risk and weight gain found no links with drinking fruit juice, putting to rest fears about these.
