In 1896, the re-birth of the modern Olympics, in a format we’re familiar with today, occurred as a result of the desire to celebrate the best in global sport. Now, 125 years later, many in the world are hoping the Tokyo games will signal a victory over the global pandemic. Women may have been excluded from the 1896 games, but that didn’t stop their desire to compete. A day after the men-only marathon, a Greek woman, Stamata Revithi ran the marathon course.
