RUNNING TECH
Sealskinz WATERPROOF SOCKS
What on earth are socksdoing in the tech part of this magazine? Well, I’m glad you asked. Because Sealskinz socks aren’t just any old socks, as you’ll find out
Words Esther Newman
Socks are the unsung heroes of our running wardrobes. When you first started running, I’ll hazard a guess that, like me, you thought that your usual cotton socks would suffice. And then, very quickly – in much the same way as you discovered after running in a normal bra – you realised that cotton socks simply don’t cut the mustard. This might be because you got a blinder of a blister. Or a hot spot on the sole of your foot. Or it might be because your feet got soaked on a run, or because they simply didn’t stay up.
Either way, as soon as this has happened to you, you realise that a small investment in a pair of socks can transform your running experience. But, as with many things to do with running, all socks are not created equal.
I first heard of Sealskinz because of the dozens of pairs of gloves I own in a quest to combat my ongoing battle with Raynaud’s. Of course, now I know it also makes a brilliant range of running socks. What I didn’tknow until recently, was that the tech behind the socks and the gloves are the same. I also didn’t know how a Sealskinz sock differs to other running socks. Firstly, they’re completely waterproof and secondly, they’re built to last. And I mean really last.
