Ahundred years ago, the world was buzzing with the news that Howard Carter had discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun late in the October of 1922. The following February he opened the sealed doorway that led to a burial chamber containing the Pharaoh’s sarcophagus. The artefacts found there, the three coffins – the innermost of gold – and all the ‘wonderful things’ he catalogued inspired art and literature, documentaries and films, fashions in clothing and design, scientific research and a deeper understanding of the ancient history of Egypt. Subsequent events gave rise to the theory that the ‘Pharaoh’s curse’ had been invoked.
