Aprolific journalist and novelist, for much of the 19th century he was second in popularity only to Charles Dickens. For ten years he worked as a freelance journalist and found his niche as a social satirist, puncturing the pretensions and foibles of Victorian society. Then he hit the big time with Vanity Fair (1848).
