THE 1975
8/10
I LIKE IT WHEN YOU SLEEP, FOR YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL YET SO UNAWARE OF IT/DIRTY HIT
Despite their hipster-grunge image, The 1975 are possibly the most credible pop band in the UK at the moment. Their brand of clean, bouncy electronica, with riff heavy guitars, comes through like a cross between INXS and Five Star as they open this – their second album – with first single ‘Love Me’, followed by more popstastic 1980s throwbacks like ‘UGH!’ and ‘She’s American’.
Casual, colloquial lyrics about everyday modern life, delivered in nonchalant tones cast the band in the same mould as Arctic Monkeys. “There was a party that she had to miss/ Cos her best friend was slashing her wrists,” is one verse in ‘Paris’ – an otherwise pretty ode to the French capital.
